| These days, almost anyone with a computer and photo software can radically alter an image. During the 2004 American presidential election year, many news outlets publicized a forged photo falsely depicting Sen. John Kerry alongside Jane Fonda at a rally against the Vietnam War. Fortunately, digital forensics expert Hany Farid is developing software that can quickly unmask such photo tampering by analyzing light sources and other subtle features. But for Kerry, who took a political hit in light of the photo, the damage has already been done. There are currently no standard penalties for photograph counterfeiters, but do you think there should be? If so, what should the punishment be? |
