In 1990, Vincent van Gogh’s Portrait of Dr. Gachet made headlines for being auctioned off at Christie’s for $82.5 million. More recently, media mogul David Geffen reportedly sold a Jackson Pollock abstract painting called simply No. 5, 1948 for $140 million. What makes a work of art worth so much money? If a copy of one of these paintings were essentially indistinguishable from the genuine article, why wouldn’t it be as valuable? Share your thoughts on the value of original artwork, and whether you would be just as content to own a fake.
