| The amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere has gone from 270 parts per million in 1800 to 365 ppm today, and it continues to rise at half a percent per year. The majority of this CO2 comes from electrical plants and other industrial sources, but individual people, most significantly in the U.S. and other developed countries but increasingly in rapidly developing countries like China and India as well, also contribute large amounts of carbon through heating their homes, driving their cars, and so on. With this in mind, what limits on the use of carbon (i.e., fossil fuels) do you feel governments should be putting on their citizens, if any? What would you as an individual be willing to do—or what have you already done—to shrink your own personal carbon “footprint”? |
