While the story might have been embellished, Mozart is said to have loved his pet starling so much that he penned a poem for it and recited it at the bird’s funeral. No doubt Mozart also composed music inspired by the bird’s singing. His bird, a European starling, Sturnus vulgarus, was a master of vocal learning, able to mimic even the sounds of other animals and humans. Have you been inspired by an avian songster? What birds do you particularly like listening to, and why do you think we humans seem to be drawn to the calls, hoots, and trills of other species?
