| Prosthetics visionary Yoky Matsuoka is developing a bionic hand she hopes will one day look, move, and even be controlled by brain signals just like a real hand. Her pioneering work could lead to regained mobility for amputees and victims of paralysis. But long before Matsuoka won her 2007 MacArthur “genius” award, she did everything she could to pretend she wasn’t smart. “I lied to my friends about which classes I was taking,” she says. “I declared proudly that I didn’t buy any textbooks.” According to Matsuoka, society places pressure on young women, even today, to behave in ways that will gain them popularity, making it difficult for them to succeed in math and science. Do you agree? If so, what can we do to change this? |
