Post subject: Stem Cells Breakthrough Posted: Wed Jun 25, 2008 11:45 am |

| In late 2007, three teams of researchers in Japan, Wisconsin, and Massachusetts reported that they had made human stem cells without destroying embryos, by essentially reprogramming adult skin cells. Was this proof that embryos—either those that would be discarded from fertility clinics or those created in a lab specifically for research—aren’t necessary, and should never be used, to advance stem cell science? The scientists who accomplished the breakthrough, including George Daley of Harvard, argue that it’s too early to know whether this new type of stem cells holds the same promise for medical treatments, and that research on all types of stem cells should continue. In the face of scientific uncertainty, do you think research with stem cells made from human embryos should move forward? |
