Marine biologist Edie Widder has built her career exploring the ocean’s depths and studying its bioluminescent animals. Yet she would be the first person to acknowledge how little she knows about ocean life relative to what has yet to be discovered. There is one thing, however, she knows for certain: Marine ecosystems worldwide are suffering severe degradation. This global crisis-in-the-making motivated Widder to cofound the Ocean Research and Conservation Association (ORCA), a non-profit corporation dedicated to the protection and restoration of marine ecosystems and the species they sustain. Are you concerned about the health of the oceans in general or of certain regions in particular? What do you consider the gravest threats: Overfishing? Pollution? Global warming? What do you think is needed to raise public awareness and change practices that are endangering the health of our marine systems?
