“Well, then there’s not much point in rebuilding New Orleans.” That’s what an official at Louisiana’s Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said when NOVA scienceNOW producer Peter Doyle asked him what would happen if the marshlands south of New Orleans destroyed by Hurricane Katrina were not restored. But the expert added that doing such work would anger the oil companies, because it would affect the waterways used to carry their cargoes, and anger the shrimp fishermen, because it would destroy their farms and would mean reconfiguring the Mississippi River. What do you think should be done?
