As Americans grapple with their ever-increasing waistlines, science is looking at the biology behind the compulsion to eat. What makes some people weigh 350 pounds and others 150 pounds? Researchers have discovered a chemical in the brain called leptin that regulates body weight—a fact that has brought scientists closer to understanding the mechanism that controls appetite. If genes underlie our desire to eat, what role, if any, does willpower play in obesity? How much is the obesity epidemic due to the environment we live in?
