| Excavated from the municipal dump of an ancient city in Roman-ruled Egypt, a half-million fragile, 2,000-year-old papyri fragments now sit packed away in a vault at Oxford University. Scholars never know what will come out of the box: a lost saying of Jesus; a page from Homer; pieces of previously unknown plays by Sophocles and Euripides; and, perhaps most intriguing, documentation of everyday life, from marriage contracts and tax declarations to hate mail and dinner invitations. If you were a scholar opening the next box, what would you ideally hope to find? |
